Giants fans, its that time of (even) year again. This is the sweet spot in the process that I love when everyone (including vegas who had us at 25-1 before last nights game) counts the giants out. Not a favorite, a team that will get knocked out in the first or second round. I LOVE IT. The Giants feed off being counted out early on, and get to fly under the radar in the beginning. This was certainly the case last night as the Giants faced off with the Mets, and there 24 year old, 99 mph fast ball throwing, Norse God nicknamed, 6 Foot 6 phenom Noah Syndergaard. Pundits sung his praises, and boy did he show out, going 7 full innings, 2 hits, and tossing 10 Strikeouts.
Here's the Giants difference, we have Bumgarner, who would rather sell his farm that he loves dearly before getting pulled from this game. Once again with Bum, I have run out of superlatives to describe his post season greatness. .50 Era in road games, with a sample size of 3 games, has a post season streak of 23 innings scoreless, this guy is not from this earth. He's doesn't get nervous, goes out and just does his job. He's Jordan in the 90's, Montana in the 80's, he's Mad cool. Then when it comes to hitting, the giants were the giants throughout most of the game, torture baseball. There was an opportunity in the middle of the game after Span finally broke the giants hitless streak by smacking a ball through the middle. Then stealing second with 2 outs, Belt came up and ripped the shit out of the ball to dead center only to be stopped by an amazing catch by Curtis Grandson with his Willy Mays like catch. That was the most nervous I had been the whole game, catches like that usually happen more often for the winning team. Thank god for Bum, who just kept mowing these mets down. Then came the 8th inning, where the giants no longer had to face Syndergaard and got some runners on base. They walked posey to first to get the giants bases loaded with Hunter Pence to bat. This, here was our opportunity to score.... but he strikes out. All hope felt lost. Bum once again, comes in and takes down there side, and like so many time before since 2010, in the vein of Cody Ross, Aubrey Huff, Edgar Renteria, Gregor Blanco, Travis Ishikawa, a role player Giant stepped up. Only in the lineup because Nunez was hurt, there was discussion of putting in a pinch runner for him in the prior inning, Conor Gillaspie steps up and hits a shot to right field for a 3 run home run. Never have I seen the air get sucked out of a stadium so quickly in my life, because they all thought the same thing at once: No way in hell are we getting three runs off of Bumgarner. Guess what: they were goddamn right. Like so many times before, Bum went up there and calmly got 3 outs like he has done so many times before. Giants baseball, Torture. On the Giants go to Chicago, to face the MLB leading Chicago Cubs. This team is stacked all up and down the board, and has an elite pitching staff. Despite all of that, I know one thing to be true: its even year October baseball in San Fransisco, they are young scrappy and hungry, and will not throw away their shot. -CC
